Skilled Migration

The General Skilled Migration Programme is available to Skilled Workers who want to emigrate to Australia. Candidates must meet the following basic requirements:

  • Age - you must be under 45 when you apply;
  • English language - you should have sufficient ability in the English language to work in Australia (at least at a vocational level);
  • Qualifications - you must have post-secondary qualifications and your skills must be assessed by the relevant assessing authority as suitable for your nominated occupation;
  • Nominated occupation - when you apply you nominate a skilled occupation, which fits your skills and qualifications. Your nominated occupation must be found on the Skilled Occupations List;
  • Recent work experience - the period of work experience required will vary depending on the number of points you may be granted for your nominated occupation;
  • Australian qualification exemption - you do not need to meet the work experience requirement if you have completed an Australian qualification less than 6 months before lodging your visa application; and
  • Skills assessment - before you apply, you must have your skills assessed by the Australian assessing authority designated to assess your nominated occupation.
  • Health assessment - you should be of reasonably good health and all applicants must have their health assessed by a panel doctor and undergo a medical examination.
  • Character assessment - you should be of good character,  this too will be assessed

Skilled-Independent Visas

Skilled Independent <back to sections

This visa subclass is the most popular Skilled Migration Category for those who wish to emigration to Australia.  It is geared towards skilled workers who are likely to make an immediate contribution to Australia’s economy.

Skilled Independent Regional (Provisional) SIR <back to sections

The SIR visa is a sponsored visa for skilled people who are willing live and work in a regional or low growth area of Australia.  Initially this is valid for a period of 3 years. After 3 years, as long as you have adhered to the conditions of your visa you will be in a position to apply for permanent residency.

State/Territory Nominated Independent <back to sections

This is a permanent visa for Skilled Migrant who have been sponsored by a participating State/Territory


Skilled-Independent Visas

Skilled Australian Sponsored <back to sections

This category is for those Skilled Migrants who have close family members living in Australia

Designated Area Sponsored <back to sections

This category is for those Skilled Migrants who have close family members who live in a Designated Area of Australia and is valid for an initial 2 year period. After this period, as long as you have adhered to the conditions of your visa you will be in a position to apply for permanent residency.

Family and Partner Visas <back to sections

If it is your plan to get married, if you already married or in a committed De Facto with an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident you may be able to obtain a partner based immigration visa to Australia.

Your prospective spouse, spouse or partner will be required to act as a sponsor. This means that he/she is required to confirm their intention to support you for the first two years that you are in Australia. 

In addition to providing proof of your relationship, the applicant will also be required to meet health and character requirements.

Prospective Marriage/Fiance(e) visa <back to sections

If it is your intention to marry an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident you may be eligible for this type of visa.

Spouse Visa <back to sections

If you are married to, or have been in a DeFacto relationship with an Australian citizen of Permanent Resident for at least 12 months you may be eligible for this type of visa

Interdependent Partner Visa <back to sections

If you are in a genuine interdependent relationship (same-sex) who is an Australian Citizen or Permanent Residency you may be eligible for this type of visa.

LRR (Last Remaining Relative) <back to sections

This visa is for those who are the only remaining member of their family living outside of Australia, apart from young children. If you have a spouse or partner he/she must also have no close relatives outside of Australia.

Carer <back to sections

If you have a relative living in Australia who is need of care because they unable to care for themselves you may be eligible for this type of visa.

Parent Migration (Permanent and Temporary) <back to sections

If you are the parent of a child who is an Australia Citizen or Permanent Resident and have no more than half of your children living outside of Australia you may be eligible for this type of visa.

The Business Skills Program is divided into 4 categories:

  • Business Owner category for owners or part-owners of a business;
  • Senior Executive category for senior executive employees of major businesses;
  • Investor category for investors/business people willing to invest in Australia; and
  • Business Talent category for high-calibre business people who have sponsorship from a State/Territory government
