Since 1 November 2005 any person applying for naturalisation as a British citizen must first complete the "Life in the UK" to accompany the submission of their application.
Since 2 April 2007 any person applying for indefinite leave to remain (permanent residence) will also be required to take the test.
This test is for those wishing to become settled or British citizens in the UK and is intended to encourage people to learn English and to find out about UK structures, laws, democratic processes and traditions at the earliest opportunity. By doing so, they can better realise their ambitions in the UK and become full and active citizens sooner. Effective integration of those who wish to make the UK their permanent home, including embracing a common language and an understanding of life in the UK is considered important to continued good race relations and community cohesion. This is a central part of the Governments managed migration policy which benefits UK society and economy.
The test contains 24 questions based on the chapters of the book, 'Life in the United Kingdom: A Journey to Citizenship. You will be given 45 minutes to answer 24 questions.
You will have to take the test if you are applying for naturalisation as a British citizen or indefinite leave to remain and your level of English is good. If your English is not considered strong, you will need to attend combined English language (ESOL) and citizenship classes. ESOL and citizenship classes help you to improve your English and learn more about life in the UK.
You must take the test before you apply for naturalisation as a British citizen or Indefinite Leave to Remain, provided you meet all other immigration requirements. Once you pass the test, you will be provided with a Pass Notification letter which must be submitted with your application.
