The International Graduates Scheme (IGS) is a route for non-European Economic Area students of higher education
institutes within the United Kingdom to remain in the United Kingdom for one year on graduation and gain work experience.
If the graduate wishes to remain in the UK on completion of one year on this scheme, they must switch over to another
immigration category such as the Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP).
Students in the United Kingdom who have successfully completed and obtained a degree, Master’s degree, PhD, or
postgraduate certificate or diploma on or after 1 May 2007 will qualify to apply.
A graduate can apply for IGS before they are issued with their degree certificate by providing a letter
from their institution confirming that they have completed the course at the required level.
In order for a student to successfully remain under the International Graduates Scheme, they must meet the
following requirements:
-
have successfully completed a recognised UK degree, Master’s degree, or PhD
in any subject or a postgraduate certificate or postgraduate diploma in any subject on
or after 1 May 2007 at a UK education institution which is a recognised listed body;
-
have completed the course within the last twelve months;
-
intends to work during the period of one year granted as an IGS participant;
-
be able to support and accommodate themselves and any dependents without the need for public funds;
-
intends to leave the UK after the period of one year unless they transfer to another scheme.
-
obtain permission before applying for IGS if their studies were sponsored by an international
scholarship agency or government.
If spouses, unmarried partners, civil partners and children are already in the UK during the applicant's stay as
a student, they can switch along with the applicant and remain in the UK. Entry clearance would be required if
the dependants are applying from overseas.
