February 24 2009 - Home Office reopens old skilled category for media reps

Source Home Office – UK Border Agency(UKBA)

For a limited time only, the UK Border Agency (UKBA) has reintroduced the category for skilled migration for representatives of overseas newspapers, news agencies and broadcasting organisations.

As part of the major shake-up and tightening of the UK immigration system, the category for representatives of overseas newspapers, news agencies and broadcasting organisations had been removed as an eligible category for migration.

Prospective migrants looking to move to the UK under this category can use tier 2 of the new points-based system, which replaces the old UK work permit pathway. Under tier 2, applicants need an employer with a valid Employer Sponsorship Licence to sponsor their UK visa.

However, the UKBA is responding to crossover difficulties faced by those media representatives who do not have an employer to sponsor them in the UK by allowing the old category for immigration to remain until a clause has been added to the tier 2 category. The clause will allow those media representatives without a UK sponsor to still apply for a UK work permit under the tier 2 category. The Home Office is likely to introduce this later this year.

Alternatively, those representatives of overseas newspapers, news agencies and broadcasting organisations without a sponsor and working in the UK for six months or less can apply for a visitor's visa under the business category.

If you have further enquires on immigration to the UK, NZ, Australia or the USA, please contact Ambler Collins and we will undertake a complimentary assessment of your eligibility. Email us at; info@amblercollins.com
