According to research from the World Economic Forum Global Competitive Report 2008-09, Singapore has the 5th most
competitive economy in the world, 7 places ahead of the United Kingdom ranking.
Standard and Poor's, a leading credit rating agency, today (BBC News 5th June 09) officially downgraded
its view of the UK economy from 'stable to 'negative' for the first time since 1978. This comes as political
uncertainly in the UK remains high.
In comparison to the political turmoil in the UK the World Economic Forum Global Competitive Report 2008-09 also
confirms that Singapore is 1st for government efficiency as a result of its legal and regulatory framework and
corporate governance standards. Hong Kong was 2nd and Switzerland was ranked 3rd.
