New Zealand has recorded its biggest monthly gain of
permanent and long-term arrivals in nearly six years in May 2009. The number of permanent long-term arrivals exceeded departures by 2,700 compared with April and was the highest monthly gain since July 2003, according to Statistics New Zealand.
This compares with gains of 2,170 in April and 780 in May 2008.
Annually, there was a net gain of 11,202 permanent and long-term migrants for the year to May 2009, compared with less than half of that (4,931) in May 2008.
The number of New Zealanders leaving for Australia is continuing to trend downwards, with 30,456
Kiwis migrating to Australia in the year to May 2009 compared with a record high of 35,400 in January this year.
There were positive signs for tourism as short-term arrivals increased to 141,900 in May, up 1% on May 2008.
This is the highest ever increase recorded in a May month.
