To apply under the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC), you must meet the basic requirements before you consider making an application:
If you meet these requirements, and can claim 100 points or more for skills, experience, and other factors on your Expression of Interest (EOI), you can submit an EOI.
If you have claimed 100 points or more on your EOI, it goes into the Pool. Every two weeks, all EOIs claiming over 140 points are automatically selected for an invitation to apply for residence. After this, lower scoring EOIs between 100 and 140 points with certain factors, such as Qualification in an Area of Absolute Skills Shortage, are selected.
Once your EOI is drawn from the pool, it goes through a verification process to ensure it is credible at which point Immigration New Zealand will send you an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
You will have to provide evidence of the claims made on your EOI through relevant documents such as medical examinations, police clearance certificates, qualifications, work experience and other documents relevant to your personal circumstances and points claims.
It is important to note any changes in policy up until receipt of your SMC residence application with Immigration New Zealand will affect you regardless of having lodged an EOI or having received an ITA.
Once your application and supporting documents have been received, Immigration New Zealand will begin assessing you for residence against their requirements and the documents support the points claimed in the EOI.
Your ability to settle in New Zealand successfully is also a factor in whether or not you are granted residence and some instances a telephone interview may be requested.
Expression of Interest(EOI)
If you are interested in applying to migrate to New Zealand as a skilled migrant you must first complete an Expression of Interest (EOI).
An EOI can only be registered if you can claim a minimum of 100 points under the points test. You must also meet health, character, age and English language and age requirements.
Providing you can meet these requirements your EOI will be accepted into the Expression of Interest Pool.
EOI’s are selected from the Pool fortnightly where the following circumstances apply:
-
EOI’s that have 140 points or more are automatically selected
-
EOI’s that have 100 points or more but less than 140 points where points are being claimed for an offer of or current skilled employment in New Zealand. If further places are available additional EOI’s are selected based on other criteria such as points being claimed in an Area of Absolute Skills Shortage. This criteria is set by the Minister of Immigration and can change from time to time.
If your EOI is not selected from the Pool, it will remain in the Pool for a maximum of six months at which point it will be withdrawn if no selection has occurred.
Should your EOI be selected from the Pool, it will undergo a preliminary checking and verification process. On completion of this process you may be invited to submit an application for residence.
Invitation to Apply (ITA)
Should your EOI be selected from the Pool, it will undergo a preliminary checking and verification process. On completion of this process you may be invited to submit an application for residence.
If invited to apply for residence it is at this stage you would need to send in all the documents required to support the claims you have made against the points test such as passports, qualifications, reference letters, etc.
The documentation required to submit with an application is extremely detailed and can take some weeks or even months to collect.
