Work
New Zealand has a strong labour market, with consistently one of the lowest unemployment rates in the
OECD of around 3.5%, and there are many employment opportunities at all job levels. However due to the small nature of
job market, if you have specialist skills it may take more time than you would expect to find the right job. The more
flexible you are with the nature of work the more luck you will have, and many new migrants use the opportunity to
change direction in employment.
New Zealand has good salaries relative to the cost of living. Salaries are normally quoted in job advertisement so
gauging the salary you could command should be relatively easy to ascertain. Below is a list of average salaries for
various job types:
Office administrator - $37, 409,
General manager - $75, 008,
Legislators, Administrators & Managers $57,013,
Professionals $51,376,
Technicians & Associate Professionals $42,869,
Graphic artists/designer - $40,079,
Software engineer/developer/programmer - $51,446.
Trade workers $39,00
Although there are no standard working hours in NZ, traditionally the working week is 40 hours, starting 8.30 and finishing at 5pm with a half hour break. However, since the Employment Contracts Act took effect, employers and employees have been free to set the length of their working week and their start and finish times. Workers generally would expect to have Saturday and Sunday off.
There is minimum of 20 days (4 weeks) leave per annum plus there are 11 public holidays every year.
